About Us
Gawler
The Criterion Tavern is situated in the south part of the first country town established in South Australia – Gawler.
The town of Gawler is 44 km north of the Adelaide CBD and close to the world famous wine producing regions of the Barossa and Clare Valley.
Gawler was established as a commercial venture by the South Australia Colony through land sale to free settlers.
The railway was established in 1857 and quickly became a junction station servicing Angaston, Burra and Kapunda. The railway was extended to Kapunda in 1860. Gawler became a junction station when a branch was constructed into the Barossa Valley in 1911.
The Criterion Tavern
The Criterion Tavern (or The Cri as it is affectionately known) was built in 1858 to service the heavy rail traffic coming through the line.
Opened in 1858, the Criterion Tavern is located in what is now known as a heritage precinct opposite the Gawler Railway station.
The Criterion Tavern captures the charm and friendly atmosphere of yesteryear. It features the historic front bar, restaurant quality dining in a large dining area, live entertainment and the largest and friendliest drive thru bottle shop in Gawler.
We are an old style pub – you know what we mean.
The type of pub when you walk through the door, you receive a welcoming smile or hello straight up. The beer is cold, the pub grub great and no matter if a local or traveller, you always feel welcome.
We are local, so we support our local teams including:
